J’espère que vous allez bien. Aujourd’hui, je vous emmène pour un voyage un peu particulier. En effet, nous n’allons pas quitter New-York. Je vous propose un voyage dans le temps, plus particulièrement, dans les sixties...
Début septembre, j’ai eu la chance incroyable d’être invitée au TWA Hotel par mon amie Sara. Elle avait reçu une nuit en cadeau et m’a proposé de me joindre à elle. J’avais déjà entendu parler de cet hôtel mais j’étais loin de m’imaginer le décor que nous allions y trouver: un hôtel hors norme investit l'ancien terminal de la compagnie TWA, conçu par l'architecte Eero Saarinen au début des années 1960 à l’aéroport John F. Kennedy (JFK) de New York. Espaces démesurés, design vintage et vues sur le tarmac, en font l'un des plus incroyables hôtels d'aéroport du monde. Vous l'avez peut-être déjà vu à la TV ou au ciné dans "Mad Men" ou "Attrape-moi si tu peux" par exemple.

In early September, I was incredibly lucky to be invited to the TWA Hotel by my friend Sara. She had received a night as a gift and offered me to join. I had already heard about this hotel but I was far from imagining the scenery that we would find there: an exceptional hotel occupies the former terminal of the company TWA, designed by the architect Eero Saarinen in the early 1960s at the airport John F. Kennedy (JFK) of New York. Oversized spaces, vintage design and views of the tarmac make it one of the most incredible airport hotels in the world. You can see the place in some shows or movies like "Mad Men" or"Catch me if you can".
Construit par l’architecte star Eero Saarinen, le terminal futuriste de la Trans World Airlines (TWA) a ouvert ses portes à l’aéroport JFK à New York en 1962. Inaugurant la grande époque des jets longs courriers, il ferme en 2001 et reste inutilisé pendant seize ans jusqu’à sa transformation en un hôtel d'aéroport.
Built by star architect Eero Saarinen, the futuristic Trans World Airlines (TWA) terminal opened at JFK Airport in New York in 1962.Inaugurated the great era of long-haul jets, it closed in 2001 and remained unused for sixteen years until it was transformed into an airport hotel.
Les architectes Beyer Blinder Belle, Lubrano Ciavarra et les designers de Stonehill Taylor rendent hommage à l’esprit glamour, à l’optimisme et à l’atmosphère des sixties par des formes arrondies et des couleurs pop. Le terminal abrite désormais le lobby, des restaurants (nous avons mangé au Paris Café, joli décor et nourriture correcte) et bars, des boutiques et le plus grand complexe sportif hôtelier au monde (Nous n’y avons pas mis les pieds!).
Architects Beyer Blinder Belle, Lubrano Ciavarra and Stonehill Taylor designers pay tribute to the glamour, optimism and atmosphere of the sixties through rounded shapes and pop colors.The terminal now houses the lobby, restaurants (we ate at the Paris Café, nice decor and decent food) and bars, shops and the largest hotel sports complex in the world (We did not set foot there!).
Les chambres :
Les chambres sont décorées avec des affiches publicitaires réalisées par David Klein pour la compagnie dans les années 1950 et 1960. Voici à quoi ressemblait la nôtre une fois nos valises déballées. Pour cette “staycation” (partir en vacances/weekend dans la ville où on vit, cela est très fréquent ici), nous avions emporté pas moins de 5 tenues!Deux “ailes” accueillent les 512 chambres et suites, parfaitement insonorisées (Nous n’avons absolument pas entendu les pistes, en revanche notre voisin de chambre… un peu plus).
The rooms are decorated with posters made by David Klein for the company in the 1950s and 1960s. This is how ours looked like once our suitcases were unpacked. For this “staycation”, we had taken away no less than 5 outfits! Two “wings” accommodate the 512 rooms and suites, perfectly soundproofed (We did not hear the planes at all, but the room next door… a little more).
Une piste de roller:
La patinoire extérieure est ouverte sur le tarmac les weekends ensoleillés.
The outdoor roller skating rink is open on the tarmac on sunny weekends.
Des expos:
Situées à divers endroits dans l’ancien terminal de TWA et dans les couloirs reliés à l’aérogare 5 de JetBlue, différentes expositions permettent aux visiteurs de voyager dans le temps à travers des décors authentiques, affichages interactifs et récits personnels. C’est certainement ce que j’ai préféré dans l'hôtel!
Located at various locations in the former TWA terminal and in the corridors connected to JetBlue Terminal 5, various exhibits allow visitors to travel through time through authentic scenery, interactive displays and personal stories. This is certainly what I preferred in the hotel!
Ma pièce favorite: une reconstitution authentique d’un salon de 1962! J’ai pris beaucoup de plaisir à constituer cette tenue, tout y est vintage ou de seconde main. Je porte une robe des années 60 et un collier ayant appartenu à ma grand-mère.
My favorite room: an authentic reconstruction of a living room from 1962! I really enjoyed creating this outfit, everything is vintage or second hand. I’m wearing a 1960s dress and a necklace that belonged to my grandmother.

Un bar dans un avion :
Décollage immédiat à 10,000 mètres d’altitude dans l’univers des longs-courriers avec un jet “Connie” L-1649A transformé en bar à cocktails!
Immediate take-off in the world of long-haul flights with a L-1649A “Connie” jet transformed into a cocktail bar!

Une piscine en rooftop:
La piscine sur le toit est ouverte toute l’année. L’été, c’est frais et rafraîchissant. En hiver, elle se transforme en un pool-cuzzi et est chauffée chaque jour!
The rooftop pool is open year-round. In the summer, it's cool and refreshing. In the winter, it turns into a pool-cuzzi and is heated up to 95 degrees every day!

Pour rejoindre l’hôtel TWA, quittez l'Air Train au terminal 5 et suivez les indications au sol, l'itinéraire est fléché, vous ne pourrez pas vous tromper!
To reach the TWA Hotel, exit the AirTrain at the Terminal 5 stop and follow the signs to the elevator on the same level as the train platform.
